Dean Hope inspired The Onyx Charter Line, precursor to the AKA Lambda Upsilon Chapter, at MIT in 1977. Founded at Howard University in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women and was the first sorority of any type established at the Institute.
