Beyond the Battlefield: Sherman Powell (2015)

Sherman Scott Powell '95 earned his Bachelors degree in Management (Course XV) in 1995.  Capt. Powell was an officer in the Army from 1995 to 2006. He was among the first of the U.S. troops to get to Baghdad in the spring of 2003, and among the first veterans of that war to return home in 2006.

His family, which includes three MIT alums, has a long tradition of military service. Capt. Powell is the son of Adam Clayton Powell III '67--whose father is the late U.S. Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.--and the brother of Adam Clayton Powell IV '92, PhD '97.

I admire your strength and endurance, and hope to someday be able to claim half of your ability to lead , as you say, by inspiration and not by fiat.

Adam Clayton Powell IV to Capt. Sherman Powell (who was in training at the US Army Ranger School at the time) in his doctoral thesis acknowledgements, 1997
