African Physical Society organizing meeting, 2007
The organizing meeting to establish the African Physical Society was held at iThemba LABS, outside Cape Town, South Africa on January 24, 2007. Mainly organized by Francis K. Allotey of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, the society aims to act as a forum to bring together physicists from across the nations of Africa for collaborations and to promote the field, especially in countries that don’t have a national physical society.
Among the attendees was Sekazi K. Mtingwa '71 (formerly Michael V. Sawyer), who earned SB degrees in Mathematics and in Physics in 1971 from MIT; from 2001 to 2003, he was appointed as a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Professor, hosted by the MIT Department of Physics.
