Sheree L. Stokes PhD '98 of Baltimore was one of the 500-plus graduates awarded PhD degrees from MIT in June of 1998. A graduate of the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, Stokes is the fourth African-American woman to receive a PhD degree in chemistry from MIT in its history. The only previous black women PhD recipients in chemistry at MIT were Sharon Haynie, Class of 1981; Cheryl Debose, Class of 1984; and 1998 MIT MLK Visiting Professor in Chemistry Lynda Jordan, Class of 1985.
