Hubert "Hubie" Eugene Jones joined the DUSP faculty as Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, and Head of the Community Fellows Program in 1973. By then, however, the cost in increases and funding cuts had already begun to affect DUSP's projects and research efforts. The department encouraged faculty to devote more time to sponsored research and initiated new contacts with the private sector. In 1977, Jones left MIT to become the first black dean of Boston University's School of Social Work, a post he held until 1993.
